Check one-two

Wow!

The Checks single 'What You Heard' has to be heard to be believed. It's unlikely there has been a more generic and sticking to the accepted blueprint of rock n roll since records began, and yes ladies and gentleman, this includes Jet. Imagine that, this single sounds less innovative and original than Jet. Less original and innovative than a band whose album was reviewed on Pitchfork, not with words, but with a video-clip of a monkey drinking its own piss. Donny Tourette would probably consider this song to be a bit too formulaic and for that, The Checks really must be saluted.

Opening with a piercing yodel and a short repeating riff, the tub-thumping drums elbow their way into recognition and the gruff vocals all fight for recognition. And after that, nothing much changes, at times the music stops and the widdly guitar section comes in but its all much of a much ness. The solo is rather lazy also.

Funnily enough, the paragraphs up to now were written on 3 listens to the song, now after a bit of internet research (after worrying that the Jet links may be a bad thing), it turns out that the band come from New Zealand and of course, Jet come from Down Under in Australia. Perhaps there may be some link but when you add The Datsuns and the D4 to that bunch of hard-rocking, old school kids from the Oceanic region, you have to wonder whats going on down there?

Its purely for fans of the genre and even at that, theres other bands peddling it a bit better.
