More a little bit of something than nothing at all!
iN so Far, who shouldn't be confused with the two American bands of the same name, are bordering on pop/punk but without the big guitar riffs and sugar-sweet harmonies. It's always best to stay away from describing a band as just rock, or alternative rock as people will therefore assume the band to be bland, however this is not the case with iN so Far.
First song off of this 8-track CD is 'Reach Out' a song with chugging guitars and big hooks. Paul Brigstock's vocals do lend out to hard rock acts more than punk or pop, and musically things are more classic than experimental. We have gentle guitars at the beginning of, 'Citizen' which carry on in this slow number very reminiscent of a rock band that is now classed as classic rock. This seems to work as an intro for 'Last Love', which although the song is a little off three minutes you wonder whether it is going to build and then go on into an epic song.
'Resonate' is a little bit Blind Melon in the alternative trippy rock, switching between big riffs to chugging guitars. Things then change completely for the slightly more punk feel of 'Never Wrong'. Simple guitars played over a nice beat with the vocals adding the melody, it's a little Alkaline Trio. Great stuff, then! This leads us into the the fuzzy guitar riffs of, 'Vanity' which again has more than a passing resemblance to Alkaline Trio but with a few more harmonies.
There are chunky bass lines in, 'Walk Away' before we have a catchy guitar riff a little like Velvet Revolver which is probably a good example of this song with it's rock swagger that's full of no apologetic hard rocking attitude. Last song, 'Why Forgive?' is a fine ending with it's big rock song stature switching from gentle to hard hitting rock, back and forth like a musical sparring session with themselves.
iN So Far probably don't bring much extra to the party, although you can rely on them giving you what's expected. There are the big guitar riffs and the strong rock vocals, but the range of the band doesn't take me any place that I haven't been before, and if not careful iN so Far could end up being a slightly under par covers band.
