Vincent Vincent and the Villains - ON MY OWN (Single)

Vincent Vincent & the Villains is a name that unashamedly harks back to a bygone age of delicately greased quiffs, polka dot halter necks and a brand new Cadillac. A period of musical history worth revisiting yet again?... definitely.

Having caught the band a few times in toilet venues over the last couple of years, 'On My Own' has already burrowed itself deep into my brain and will do yours in due course. Finding themselves signed to EMI after endlessly slogging it out on the gig circuit I feel a strange sense of pride and so should they.

Clicks of fingers and bass underpin the cheesy but charming voice of Mr Vincent himself and will have you swooning and swaying from the off. The joyful strum of cheap guitars and and lolling backing vocals is so simple it's almost annoying but is instantly and irresistibly likeable.

Despite the affable and seemingly cheerful touches, the inevitable cry of "Rock and roll!" before the solo for instance, the song is a tale of reflection but defiance "I won't cut myself on other people's broken dreams" croons Vincent, carefully avoiding the lyrical clichés associated with rockabilly folklore.

Of course many others revel in this glorious genre and VV & the V could easily fall into the trap of novelty, being only fit for nostalgic fancy dress parties and weddings. Far from it, the band are a breath of fresh air and have the songs to last the distance. This is one of them.
