Christmas Indie Style
Getting fully into the festive swing Japanese/New Yorkers Asobi Seksu have set out to transform a classic Christmas song but forget a Cliff Richard number getting an indie twist this trio has decided to revamp the Ramones, ‘Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight) giving it an edgy indie trance lift. Gone are the rock tinged snarls of Joey Ramone that splendidly sounded like he’d drunk the entire stock of a Jack Daniel’s distillery whilst smoking his way through France’s ration of cigarettes and in its place come the seemingly wide-eyed innocent voice of Yuki Chikudate, immediately and delightfully washing the track in a new texture of fuzz pop. But that’s not to say the trio have completely obliterated the Ramones, for all its new found indie quirkiness the soul of the Ramones still resounds throughout leaving you with a warm festive tremble that even Scrooge couldn’t refuse.
Fittingly the B Side sees the band delving into a track from their latest album Citrus with the aptly titles ‘New Years’, brimming with uplifting goodness wrapped neatly together with the bi-lingual brilliance of the band that will help you dance the new year in with style. Forget your carols and chuck that Cliff Richard Christmas collection on the log fire, this year Christmas has got an indie face lift to deck the halls to.
