Let's see those fingers...
That ubiquitous Q-tip is back again. The distinctive rapper made an appearance on R.E.M's song 'The Others' earlier this year and here he strikes again providing the vocals for The Chemical Brothers' 'Galvanize'. And 'Galvanize' follows the rather outstanding 'Get Yourself High' and the astonishingly astounding career of one of electronic music's most prominent acts, The Chemical Brothers. However it doesn't match the mark of the rip-roaring flamboyance of 'Setting Sun' or the get-down-and-danceisity of 'Block Rockin Beats' but that isn’t to say it's a bad song. By no means is this a bad song. No no.
Quite the opposite, yes yes. It is in fact a very good song. The lyrics are poignantly relevant and the tune properly jigging. It takes the ideas of 'Surrender' one step further and in doing so The Chemical Brothers evolve once again into another era where their music will be just as vital as ever. They've got their fingers on the pulse, fingers on the button.
Both the B-side, 'Rise Up', and 'Galvanize' give rise to some very strange, squiggly melodies that jump and wobble about all over the place, another example of The Chemical Brothers putting their usual, unusual stamp on music. As we're heading into the second half of the new millennium's first decade, there are certain things we cannot ignore, Q-tip's contribution shedding light onto these things renders 'Galvanize' a song not to ignore. But still not the Brothers' best, Music: Good Response: Satisfied. Fingers on the buttons...
