British Sea Power’s new single “Waving Flags”, like a lot of music, could be interpreted on two levels. It can either be seen as a huge anticlimax track, the lacklustre result of a prolonged period of philosophising over their route to new material or it could be seen as a triumph, an exultation of what’s good about the band and a flaunt of their immense musical abilities. Though, here’s the thing, there is a third alternative perception; that is ... who the hell cares ...it’s just good music and that’s what matters.
The truth be told, British Sea Power’s latest offering isn’t incredible. It wouldn’t necessarily blow the underwear of you but, honestly, nowadays what actually can? It’s a pretty decent song, in all fairness. “Waving Flags” is very reminiscent of the approach of Arcade Fire, in fact very nearly crossing into pastiche territory, whilst carefully and cleverly still tied to the kind of style the band are noted for. This anthem-esque tune has a rasping chorus, flourishing guitars, soaring vocals, and a somewhat chant-like quality to it.
I wouldn’t go as far as describing it as “the Festival Song of 2008” (The Guardian) because it doesn’t nearly come as close to a Festival-anthem but you will find that it’s incredibly atmospheric, vigorous and effervescent.
