Sound Artifacts Music

The Singles (yes that is the name of the band) release their second album ‘Start again’ on homegrown label Sound Artifacts Music. Sounding almost like a modernized failing 80’s band, The Singles have thrown together a terrible group name (which by the way is impossible to google) and a coalition of everything they listened to whilst growing up.

T-rex influences are definitely prominent throughout, touching occasionally on 20th century legends Squeeze, The Jam, Kinks and the Beatles. The album opens up pretty well, yet considering the press release referred to these guys as “the last rock and roll band on the planet”, I have to strongly disagree with the marketing ploy. There isn’t anything very rock and roll about this at all- in fact, it is merely all of the above tied into one and released in a new era. See, I can’t dislike it because it is everything I love about the 60’s and from then onwards.

I just question the originality of what they are packaging. The Singles provide a lack of experimentation and that just creates plain frustration. You almost feel lie you’re sitting drinking a pint of ale in a private working men’s club listening to a band that never made it. At times, they over do simple drumming, become pretentious wannabes and no doubt wear silly hats.

As I said- it’s pretty good and reminiscent of sitting in my lounge with my dad blaring tunes in between his Motown. But it’s copycat down to a fine art. I’d much prefer to listen to the originals thanks guys.
