Kid Harpoon - The Second EP
It is a strange thing when an artist releases two EP’s before an album. But Kid Harpoon has done just that. The creativeness of the tracks seems to be in full swing on this release, but failed when it came to the title.
‘The Second EP’ sees that this singer songwriter has fashioned some very well put together tracks, which flow with imagery. ‘Fathers And Sons’ include the lines “moments of memory fade from view/I’m through with my sickening images of you” and ‘Lay Of The Land’ with “I did what I had to do/I was sorry when I saw your point of view/but I hope that in time/you'll see mine”. These two in particular stand out.
Each track varies in its own way. First up is the electric ‘Riverside’. This track begins all nice and smooth running but the screeching and ruggedness are not as attractive. It gets very intense with sounds bouncing in all directions and vocals sounding as if they are trying to be a little more intense than they can manage. Next up is ‘Fathers And Sons’ where a story is told in a mysterious and edgy way with the chorus adding another dimension; I’m just not sure which direction.
The mid riff of the CD includes ‘Suicide Granddad’ and ‘Her Lady Sways’. The first has an acoustic jumpy folksy side, while also being quite atmospherically dark. The latter is about “ladies of the night”, with a folk tinged guitar intro and a jazzy mid section of keys I was surprised in a contented way. It is this element that keeps the beat flowing, and lightens the CD up.
When looking towards the end of the EP, ‘The Dark’ has that exact beat with a mystical sense which makes me wanna cut off my ears; after a while its gets kinda gloomy and full of melancholy. The last track, ‘Lay Of The Land’ is an acoustic dreary fest. The vocals echo to maintain attention, offer a heartfelt rendition about the end of a relationship while play gentle acoustic strumming of guitar.
All in all the CD isn’t half bad. There are a few moments where you may lose interest, but the majority of it will keep you entertained and fulfilled.
