Ordinary Song
There are countless bands on indie labels peddling so-called Sunshine-filled-guitar-based-pop, all desperately trying to resurrect the quality control of the hit parade back to a 1960’s ideal, where an ordinary song can mean something instead of being the disposable nappy it is today.
From a band that likes to call their albums things like ‘SING SONG’, you can’t help but expect something sickeningly chirpy, with the Californian heritage and major label support only adding to the dread. Rather than licking the toilet bowl of god-awfulness that contemporaries Scouting for Girls and One Night only revel in, The Little Ones are actually OK. This particular ‘Ordinary Song’ is sprinkled with the charming little head-nodding runs and lusciously simple chords that could grace a Beach Boys Christmas carol. Very much like an American brand version of Danish band Mew, but with the bracing Scandinavian wind replaced with a West Cost breeze.
“I met you on the radio…” is the hook, reiterating the idea that a great pop single can equate to a good friend. This is more of an acquaintance, but one you smile at nonetheless.
