Funky Indie Electro
The superb Subliminal Girls bring Duran Duran's 80's pop classic, 'Hungry Like The Wolf' right up to date with a vital injection of indie energy. Guitars clash and howl and percussion pumps away, while the retro harmonies and pop goodness still brim over, begging the listener to cast off their shame and hit the dance floor. The brisk pace adds an incendiary edge.
Second a-side, 'WLTM' is billed as "a love song for 2008" and is a suitably tongue in cheek tale of modern love via the internet with lyrics like, "Just met this girl on the internet, got to love that pixallated face". The combination of synth stabs and sways and swaggering guitars make for an interesting combination with as much vitality as the Duran Duran cover but a little more modernity.
The b-side, 'Self Obsession Is An Art Form' is another cute pastiche of modern society, "I'm too drunk to carry you home, you're too drunk to carry me home, we're so drunk that we'll never get home" sigh Jim Rhesus' sweet lyrics over a lifting melange of synths and guitars.
Subliminal Girls prove themselves to be a decent and entertaining indie band who're capable of producing an interesting cover version - a tricky feat, however there's nothing quite sublime about this Subliminals' release.
