Not Alls Fun At The Fair
Engagingly enchanting and yet harbouring a darkly sinister agenda, Martina Topley Bird’s return to the music world will leave you buzzing with feel good vibes if somewhat intriguingly disturbed. Like the fairground folk from which it takes its name, ‘Carnies’ offers a dose of bright chipper seduction nicely encased in sweet melodies and the sultry care free vocals of Martina. But not alls pleasant at the fair. Lurking ominously in the background is a creepy ripple that continually threatens to burst through as Martina hauntingly invites you into this two sided world luring you with a touch of almost Hollywood glamour of a bygone era but always alluding that not all that glitters is gold.
Boasting the talents of everyone’s favourite producer, Danger Mouse, ‘Carnies’ bristles with polished perfection whilst still sparkling with all the fun of the fair. Usually this would be enough to scale the charts but with every girl and her mother seeming to be flooding through the music gates Martina may sadly get washed to one side.
