Likeable Goth
'When The Sun Dies' is the new single from the London darkwave/goth orientated rock band NFD. It is taken from the new E.P 'Deeper Visions' due out on April 28th and follows their last album 'Dead Pool Rising' from 2006. It isn't any surprise that NFD, with it's founder being Tony Pettitt from Fields Of The Nephilim fame, sound like your middle of the road goth rock. When I reviewed their last album I considered it to be a large dollop of Sister of Mercy, with a sprinkle of Tenebre, a dash of Fields of Nephilim, a handful of HIM and a pipette of The Cult. Taking into account this offering is only one song (and an utterly dreadful 'extreme beat mix'), I have heard little that sways me from my opinion.
But 'Dead Pool Rising' was an up and down affair, and if this song was included on their last album it would definitely be an 'up'. It's a catchy if unadventurous track that wont win any originality awards nor push the genre in any new directions. But if you like deep male vocals, appreciate the under-produced guitars of HIM and are tired of the operatic goth bands of Scandinavia, then this could be worth a listen. Blow you mind it wont, but it may give you someone to listen to when you tire of the above bands.
