Match this and try and stay cool

The Matches have been around in one form or another since 1997, hailing from the same area (and influences) as Green Day. Not that this new offering sounds anything like their proclaimed influences of Bowie, The Who, and Green Day themselves. In actual fact it sounds exactly like you’d expect its label of ‘indie pop rock’ to sound. Not bad, but not original either. An instantly forgettable slice of slightly pop-with-guitars-and-football-chant-voices, which will only be bought by wannabe indie-kids. And they won’t buy it; they’ll download it.

And I worry about any band that dresses all in white for the cover of their album. At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking that Westlife had gone punk, or that McFly were posing as U2. Actually, that second one isn’t a bad likeness for how this single actually sounds.

So give it a listen, enjoy the upbeat, memorable chorus and hum along to the rest of it. Just don’t expect to remember it five minutes later.
