It’s the day of The Triffids.
You have to love Domino records, they’ve had some decent money brought in from the success of Franz Ferdinand and the Arctic Monkeys and rather than wasting it on the same brand of up and coming spotty indie kids, they’ve ploughed a lot of the proceeds into bringing back bands from yesteryear who were possibly forgotten but manage to fit the musical template of today like a glove.
One such band is The Triffids, an Australian act who made a fleeting impact on the UK indie scene in the mid 1980s and its no real surprise as their sound fits in perfectly with what was around then and ‘Old Ghostrider’ could have came from many bands but it’s a really enjoyable track.
It strikes you just how much of this sound is in today’s acts when you have to question whether its Bricolage or The Triffids That are playing with only the accent giving the game away. Whether this tells you how reliant on old sounds that the new bands are today or whether you think this means that good music is timeless, is up to you but ‘Old Ghostrider’ has that clever edge mixed with edgy tunes that will have the cool girls dancing and the cool boys nonchalantly nodding along to.
