Blood Red Shoes - Say Something, Say Anything

It seems like a lifetime ago (in musical terms) since I first heard Blood Red Shoes. The energy of their 2006 single ‘You Bring Me Down’ was enough to leave you spellbound; such was its ferocity and vigour. They managed to create a sound that was at once complex, colossal and invigorating; it burned with a fiery intensity; packing more energy, angst and balls into a two minute single than many bands manage in an entire career. The fact that such glacial force was created by a mere guitar and drums combo set them apart from the also-rans and had critics and fans alike salivating; Blood Red Shoes were seemingly destined for great things.

Two years on, the world is still waiting for the band’s debut album; label issues have delayed the release of ‘Box of Secrets’ for over a year and thus the band find themselves at a crucial crossroads in their career. However, ‘Say Something Say Anything’ quickly allays any fears the band will be consigned to the dustbin of musical history. This is a superbly serrated, sharp toothed and ferocious slice of music, which succinctly showcases everything which makes Blood Red Shoes such a fantastic proposition. It’s heartening to see “two arrogant little kids” from Brighton make a noise so furious and unaccommodating, which provides a much welcome juxtaposition to the humdrum indie that seems to be in vogue with many currently.
