Lucky 13 On The Way

The Cure return with the first of several singles to be released on the 13th of every month ahead of the release of their 13th studio album. It's undeniably a Cure song wit lyrics like, "I love what you do to my hips", an insist, melodic chorus and sparkling melody. With such a vast back catalogue, The Cure's music could almost have a genre to itself - glittery goth pop or melodic glam pop might do it - and this is the only convention which 'The Only One' settles into; whether that's a bad thing is for you to judge, but why ruin a successful formula? This is a spritely, sexy little tune that bubbles along with cheery charms.

B-side 'NY Trip' is a psychedelic tune with Robert Smith's usual theatrical overtones and incisive yelps played out over a starry guitar and keyboard melody that swims with giddy pleasure. There's no denying that The Cure can still write a pretty ditty and unlike many bands at this stage in their careers, they've maintained their dignity with it, producing tunes that still sound bright and ignite a certain spark in the hearts of fans. Here's to lucky 13!
