All that jazz!
Okay, here we go again, I think as I see a single for another blonde attractive female solo artist in 24 year old Holly Rose, but after a quick listen you can see that she is up there with the better crop. At the moment there are a couple of genres that these artists fall into: The Ballads, The Retros, The Divas, The Hippies and The Others. The Ballads, are slow piano or mid-tempo rock songs, whereas The Retros sing the Blues/Jazz tunes, The Divas are R’N’B singers over computer generated beats, The Hippies are folk singers and The Others are everything else! Holly Rose falls into the The Retros category made famous by Amy Winehouse and Duffy, whilst up and coming singer Nell Bryden is also doing this style well.
With this single, ‘Apple’, which is off of the album of the same title, that is due for release in February 2009, we have a mid-tempo ballad that flirts with some of the above categories like R’N’B mixed in with her slightly smoky vocals and wrapped up in a blanket of the Jazz and electro beats in the background. There is a lot of depth to both Holly’s voice and the strong production giving us a very satisfying end result.
So it just goes to show that whilst we do see many, many, many female solo artists release singles, there are still some good stand out singers that do more than just look good. Holly Rose is definitely a one to watch.
