She’s in fashion.
Rock n roll is alright but being a supermodel is where it’s at. There are a lot of similarities between them both but c’mon, supermodels get the glitz, the glamour, the freebies and the travel without the pesky business of having to write songs or appear to have any discernable talent other than walking in a straight line. Okay, that and being absolutely gorgeous and be willing to make an unhealthy amount of sacrifices in their personal life and pay great attention to what they eat and drink, well yeah, that’s about it. Of course, for some, this isn’t enough.
Take Agyness Deyn for example. In case you are unfamiliar with her work, she is a former chip shop worker who gets paid money to wear clothes (which she is rather good at to be fair) and she is probably the biggest thing to hit the UK modelling circuit since Kate Moss. And like Kate Moss, she is getting involved in the singing game. Aside from snogging (ahem) a large number of musicians, Kate added some rather good vocals to Primal Scream’s cover of ‘Some Velvet Morning’ and in doing so, raised the bar for all other models. Not only is it enough to be rock n roll in the view that girls want to be you, boys want to “be with” you, the top girls need to get on-stage and prove they have the pipes to go for it too.
Which takes us neatly to ‘Who’, a single by The Five O’Clock Heroes featuring Agyness Deyn. If the rumour mill is correct, the lead singer of the band is currently “being with” Deyn but who knows, it could all be a publicity stunt to give the song more publicity. Does the track need the extra burst of column inches this tittle-tattle will bring?
Probably.
Its not bad actually, it probably lacks a little to have been a big hit regardless of who performed it but there are some decent moments and Deyn can sing. She provides a light and sweet counterpoint to the throaty growl of the main vocals and does her best to give some emotion to a chorus that’s a bit limp. Musically, it’s a bit light but the section with the glockenspiel chimes sits rather nicely.
All in all, it’d be a decent album track and without Deyn’s involvement it wouldn’t really have been considered as a single. The model’s performance certainly indicates she would hold her own if given another chance and this may not be the last you have heard of Agyness Deyn with regards to the music world.
