Same again landlord

Celebrating 20 years as a band this year The Levellers return with new single ‘Burn America Burn’, taken from their new album ‘Letters from the Underground’.

As a live band The Levellers can cut it with the best of them, guaranteed to get a crowd moving every time. On record they’ve had a clutch of outstanding singles but it’s probably fair to say that they’ve never really displayed any great desire for variety and it’s not surprising that ‘Burn America Burn’ treads familiar territory. Punchy verses are interspersed with a rousing chorus and the trademark violin soaring above it all and it’s a good enough song but there’s no escaping the fact that it sounds like it would fit on their first album.

The middle eight is a nice departure but it’s not long enough and before you know it it’s business as usual. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to a winning formula and it clearly works for fans of the band but there’s nothing here that is likely to entice those that weren’t swayed first time around.
