Dirty fuzz.
The first thing that strikes you about the opening moments of ‘Sharkie’s Bone Symphony’ is the familiarity of the main riff. It’s a shame, because there’s a visceral, raw quality at the core of the track. The vocals are emotively Kurt Cobain like, verging on a kind of frenetic hysteria and the guitars are almost metal; at the very least a dirty rock and roll kind of heavy and layered with lashings of fuzz. ‘Sonic Mammoth’ is like a grunge version of a surf tune; a hooky little number with sixties a pop vibe washed away by those fuzzy layers and slightly reminiscent of Pixies in their prime. Even though there are plenty of influences to spot here the songs are catchy, pretty heavy and packed with emotion so they stick with you.
