Going Somewhere But Not Very Fast

They came, they played some ripped off riffs, they spawned a complete revolution in modern music and they’ve pretty much flattered to deceive ever since. Yes we’re talking about The Strokes, Albert Hammond Jr’s ‘big band’. But where his more recognisable group has faltered recently it looks like his solo stuff could really take off.

GfC is a meaty number laden with tough guitars and deceptively powerful vocals. Production values are high and the crunching bass is an absolute killer. In fact all the elements are here for a potentially brilliant rock number. But somehow it just falls short.

Unlike the Strokes Hammond seems to be lacking a little in the energy department, there’s a bit too much of a ‘going through the motions’ feel to this. And whilst talent can disguise that to a certain degree it seems he’s destined to be an also ran as opposed to trend setter when it comes to his solo work which is a shame because the talent is there in lurking in the background for all to see.
