Another Fine Pop Tune
Martha Wainwright delivers an epic confessional tale with a skyscraping chorus and smoothly formulated bitterness running through it like a vein. 'You Cheated Me' is a blend of dense pop with plenty of instruments completing its glorious mix, and country twang, which has always characterised the Canadian singer's vocals. It's this dual appeal of classic singer/songwriter and impassioned indie that makes the singer both popular with an older audience such as viewers of Jools Holland's shows and Radio 2 listeners, and young people who identify with Martha's feisty feelings. 'You Cheated Me' is a pretty straightforward tale of heartache but it's delivered with elegance and plenty of maturity. Although her stories of failed romances make for great songs; you can't help but feel that Martha might deserve a little happiness soon!
