Play it, Sam!

Here we have the DVD of the single, ‘Second Time Around’ by one of the forerunners of the Jazz/Blues new breed, Nell Bryden. Here at Room Thirteen we recently reviewed the single and two accompanying tracks, and it’s easy to see why there are murmurs about her - let’s face it she’s young and attractive, with a good voice singing a timeless genre of music that is once again en vogue. A clean Amy Winehouse mixed with a little more streetwise Duffy, if you will.

With the video here, I am glad that Nell hasn’t decided to be contemporary or shy away from the visions that are conjured up when you hear her songs. It would be disappointing if it was filled with swimming pools, parties and fast cars, whereas here we have Nell as a nightclub singer in a smoky club, whilst flashes of the storyline with the 3 main characters play out in the old fashioned way. The characters of course being, Nell, The Lover and The Other Woman.

So spliced together both imagery and music - which includes snare-drum shuffles, double-bass twangs and piano key tickling • compliments each other, and with the whole thing being less that two-and-a-half minutes, it’s short, sweet and satisfying, just like some men like their women, Toots…
