Previous R13 Band of the Week ready to explode.
This City have been on the R13 radar for quite a while now, having been featured as Myspace Band of the Week towards the end of 2007. We were impressed back then, and with the release of their new single ‘We Move’, we are even more so now. Everyone hates the “we told you so” line, but this single bears all the hallmarks and hooks required to push these youngsters through the muddled murky waters of mediocrity and onto the bigger stages in the very near future.
Perhaps the most impressive element of this track is the dual melodic guitars that carry the vocals, with a hook so strong the hairs on your neck stand to attention. This is regulated by an almost dance-like drumbeat, before launching into a venomous overdriven chorus with the band seizing the opportunity to showcase a glimmer of their punk rock roots.
Drawing on post-hardcore influences such as Hopesfall and Thursday, yet fusing this with acute melodies and frenetic foot-tapping rhythms reminiscent of many so called ‘new-wave’ bands, This City are primed and ready to unleash their highly infectious wares. It is so satisfying seeing a band grow and realise their potential, and the Brighton rockers have done this in double-quick time. Bring on the album in the Spring, it will be very interesting to see which direction this talented group go. Upwards, no doubt.
