Failing to grab
Just because a song can be labeled as ‘easy on the ear’ and has a snug, commercial feel to it, doesn’t mean it should be disregarded as average and dull. Unfortunately ‘Brakes’ by Royword is all of that.
It sits comfortably alongside the One Republics, Keanes and Goo Goo Dolls of this world, all of whom are very good at what they do if you like that kind of thing. I bet more people reading this than would care to admit have found themselves humming along to ‘Stop and Stare’ when overhearing it on a shop radio, which is the point, and some would say skill of this kind of music. One catchy hook and something that when examined closely is arguably lacking in imagination, catches yours without even trying.
‘Brakes’ begins well enough, a pleasant, melodic intro suggests we could be in for something that builds into a solid radio tune like their last single ‘Dust’. Sadly the chorus, the bit that’s meant to grab the attention, er, doesn’t.
A check of previous singles shows that Royworld have it in them to tick the potential hit single boxes; ‘Brakes’ however falls someway short.
