They are the kings

Power pop has never been so effective than when played by the four talented musicians that make up We The Kings. After touring with the likes of Cobra Starship, Boys Like Girls, Cute Is What We Aim For, Madina Lake and more recently The Academy Is… where I managed to catch them live, We The Kings have finally released their debut self titled album.

If anyone from the UK or more specifically London talk about their hometown and how it has influenced them, there is probably going to be a negative twist to the tale. This Florida four piece adore their hometown so much they’ve written an album about it. With this release they’ve embraced their upbringing, writing songs reflecting on how much their hometown means to them and how it sculptured them not just as individuals, but also as a band.

The songs created by this magnificent mesh of musical minds are remarkable and extremely catchy. Each song has a powerful presence that explodes and sucks you in with a vacuum that is created. ‘Skyway Avenue’ has a chorus that you can’t help but becoming involved in. Sing along, well attempt to, tap your shoes, nod your head, you become overpowered to do the slightest of movements. ‘Check Yes Juliet’ is another remarkably infectious tune. But for this one it is the clapping that you can’t help but want to do, and whether it is in the privacy of your home, at a gig or standing in the middle of a packed Piccadilly Line tube on the way to work, I highly recommend you do!

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Travis Clark is the front man for the band and handles the position very well. His vocals burst through the songs with a Florida surf style that you cant help but adore. The backing harmonies, or harder hitting, strong and in your face vocals from Hunter Thomsen are enough to rip out your heart and replace it with a mini-sound system.

I know pronounce you “Kings of Power pop” come and collect your crowns…
