Disaster averted.
This five track mini album seems to be a statement of intent for the future of the band, and who can blame them after losing their front man just after the release of their first album. These five tracks are just as brutally heavy as their previous material, however at first it seems they may have taken a more straight forward approach to this new record; a lot of the quirky riffs and off kilter melodies are gone and new vocalist (guitarist Frank Forman)has less depth and versatility in his voice. This is only true of the first couple of tracks though and from ‘Volumes’ onwards things really pick up.
If anything 'Volumes' is heavier and more intense than 'The Mirimar Disaster', and they still have some decent tunes on offer. Franks vocals may be less versatile but they are also less of an acquired taste so the tracks tend to be easier to find your way into. Title track ‘Volumes’ is one of the highlights, more of the diverse, off kilter edge they do so well is present and with those new easy on the ear vocals it turns into a killer tune. Overall it looks like this is a band who will not suffer too greatly from the loss of their vocalist; they’ve produced five cracking new tunes that reward more on each listen.
