Not a Christmas tune to remember
‘Tis the season to be jolly…’ The Wombats have decided to go festive for us with a seasonal single. You may think it a little risky to have a go at creating a memorable or even enjoyable Christmas tune and you would be correct.
‘Is This Christmas’ is the first new material we have heard from the Wombats since their debut album was released in November of last year. Unfortunately, this Christmas tune has no real Christmas atmosphere supplied. No festive spirit, warmed tummy feelings or tingles. There are a few pings of sleigh bells on occasions and the shouting of ‘Is This Christmas?’ but this doesn’t make it enjoyable. Towards the end there is an increase in cheer but by the time it begins, the song ends.
The track may be made for the festive season, but I can’t imagine it being remembered alongside Wizard, Slade or even the Darkness. The only real good thing to be said regarding this tune is the fact the profits from its release are donated to MENCAP, a charity for people with a learning disability and their families. For this reason, I wish them luck with the single release.
