Promising and jangly

The Christmas season is a time to think of everyone, including ex lovers, but this year, that arduous task has been a lot easier by the emergence of the band Exlovers. ‘Just A Silhouette’ is the debut single by the band and it has a quirky indie feel, that whilst by no means original, manages to sound very welcoming and encouraging. The guitar lines manage to grab a lot of attention with their clarity and extended performances at the end of the lines and you will quite rightly have the jangly sound in your head for days.

The vocals are a bit non-descript but the Elliot Smith tone that the press release is desperate to push at least has some basis in truth, although it takes a few listens to really appreciate. Press release lies are usually a great source of fun and enjoyment but this time around it appears that the writers have at least listened to the band for once; hurrah and a season of goodwill to all folk and PR writers!

It seems slightly strange to try and force this record onto the public at a time when minds are on other matters, early January would have been a far better release time but that said, the song may just provide blessed relief from the amount of saccharine rot that is permeating the airwaves, video channels and peoples heads at this moment in time.

The B-side is a bit drab but definitely harks at a wider talent from the band for a debut release, this two track salvo is promising and you can add Exlovers to your list of bands to check out in 2009.
