Cute And Bubbly Indie
Ruarri Joseph can clearly write and play a great tune, ‘Hope For Grey Trousers’ is a funky indie number with some wily rock guitar licks that enthuse it with a bluesy style that also extends to the lazy vocals. It’s a light-hearted and fun number with a neat story about the life of an old-fashioned musician. It’s catchy and well written but a little samey if you consider the work of other indie bands and musicians out there at the moment; maybe Ruarri has just got here at the wrong time, albeit with the right tune.
‘Love You Still’ is more of a ballad with a slow, lamenting pace and delicate mix of jazzy guitars and slow, sultry rhythm. ‘Goodbye Same’ has a real country air to it with a twee little keyboard run that adds a quirky edge. It’s an upbeat, sweet little number that almost verges on the soft and sickly style that graces so many chirpy TV adverts.
Ruarri Joseph does what he does very well and his songs are fun, but he’s not doing very much different, which leaves the listener a little bored and ready for the next slightly countrified indie singer.
