Musically recycled rock!
Liverpool rockers, The Hot Melts, are back with another single following up the hugely catchy, ‘(I Wish I Had) Never Been In Love’, with ‘Edith’. Now it is quite coincidental, but there is a slight resemblance in the verse to U2, who I also have to review this week. Shame as I’m not a big U2 fan…However the song does build up enough with something a little different which stops you from checking the CD again to make sure that this is indeed on Epitaph Records…
The song is mid-tempo and has a thick bass-line running in the background that is like a crouching tiger waiting to pounce, whilst some twangy guitars give us the Indie-Rock feel that lead to the U2 and ultimately The Killers comparisons. I guess the later may be a little closer, although I find the two bands have musically merged of late…The chorus is actually very good and flirts ever so slightly with being catchy. This is a classic case of being a grower so it is worth persisting.
The Hot Melts are an Indie-Rock band with a dark and tough side that quite happily parade as a punk band once in a while. That’s not entirely bad in my book. ‘Edith’ is not quite as harmonic and 60’s rock influenced like other songs, but it’s a good strong tune. Currently on tour in America and then embarking on a British tour with Eagles Of Death Metal, that gives you an idea of the audience…
