Insouciant Indie
Wave Pictures have certainly received plenty of hype in the last few months so their new single gives us the chance to work out whether they’re really worth it. ‘If You Leave It Alone’ is a curious but pleasant mix of indie quirkiness imbued with jazzy brass licks, a charming melody and lazy guitar riffs that feel overcome with the exhausting delights of summer. It’s the sort of record that suits a relaxing day in the sunshine as the soft brass notes float gently through your skull with warm elegance.
‘Polar Bear’ only features three members of the band but three is clearly enough to make quite some crazy racket with sly guitar solos and a jaunty melody about being a polar bear stuck in a zoo. It’s fun, frivolous and possibly the best, or only song to feature the line, “who ate his pants?” which even the singer himself can’t deliver without a giggle. So whether Wave Pictures are worth the fuss is a matter of opinion, as always, if you value lazy indie with sweet vibes and want your songs slow and easy then you’ll probably love this.
