St. Vincent, otherwise known as Annie Clark, releases ‘Actors Without Words’, the first single to be taken from her sophomore album ‘Actor’.
The song lacks in momentum and is unable to forcefully make its presence known and welcomed. The pounding of drums drowns out the vocal presence. If this aspect were to be turned down a notch and the vocals nudged up a little then the resulting song may have been quite a cracker; on a gentler tune the vocals may have had more of an effect and suited better. Clark’s vocals hold nowhere near enough power to catch the attention of a listener and keep them engaged for the tracks duration and that of the second song on the CD ‘Bicycle’.
The second song is rather placid with rumbles of drums, bass and keys. The vocal presence is not drowned out on this one but more dominant, yet the music is still very subtle and quite wispy. These are not great songs and they do not tickle my taste buds.
