Nothing Special

Johnny Truant have a hard job following the well supported Ga Ga's but while most of their crowd leave, Johnny Truant manage to pull in a pretty healthy showing of their own and certainly get a good reception when they come on.

Subtle they aren't! Flying straight into a big mess of a song, the first thirty seconds are fairly indecipherable with deep grunting vocals backed by crashing guitars. This sonic battery is punctuated at irregular intervals by stop-start music breaks but there is no let up in the intensity of the vocals. The lead singer works the stage well using the whole of the available space and is a worthy front man. The drumming is relentless double bass carnage but whilst there's no denying that Johnny Truant pack a punch it is sometimes a little hard to tell where it's aimed!

Sure Johnny Truant are proficient at what they do but there are plenty of other bands playing a similar style and Johnny Truant don't really have anything extra to set themselves apart. To give them their dues though, as the set progresses their intensity and raw power is impressive and the majority of the audience appreciate it. The tunes also begin to come through later into the set but, with the odd guitar interlude aside, the pace is frantic from start to finish. If loud and intense is your thing then you could do much worse than Johnny Truant and for today's crowd they will do just fine.
