Watch out! there's a maniac about!
With a bit of help from the Fratellis before them, The Automatic kicked the Main Stage crowd into life and created a real party atmosphere in the early evening sunshine.
OK so for many the highpoint was to come at the end of the set, as their summer smash 'Monster' was held back for the climax. However in 'Raoul' the single which was released previous to 'Monster', they have another anthem that not only rivals it's more successful buddy, but for me is as catchy, has more energy and definitely deserves another crack at the singles market so that the world can appreciate how good it is.
'You shout You Shout You Shout You Shout' and 'Keep Your Eyes Peeled' were other note worthy highlights as the welsh rockers blasted through their debut album in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd.
Most interesting was their cover of Kanye West's 'Gold Digger'. With maniac synth guy Pennie providing the rap, this track that was originally performed for a Radio 1 session, seemed to divide the crowd but certainly works and gives real variation to their high energy, punk edged set.
Pennie is great to watch, however sticking him on one side of the stage does leave the band looking a little unbalanced. Nobody can compete with this box of tricks of a man, but were your attention to be drawn to the middle of the stage it did seem as if the rest his mates were hardly moving. This begs the question, why is this nutter not the center of attention? Alright so it might be more fun for the sound crew but where there's a will there's a way and all that...
It is understandable how 'Monster' is going to become a little tired soon, however if you're sick of it, don't let that put you off checking this lot out live as they can't fail to entertain you.
