Part 1 of 2
Having pulled out in 2005, Jimmy Eat World were making up for it two years on, with a double dose of action on the Saturday at Leeds. Later they would headline the Lock Up Stage, but played a mid-afternoon set on the Main Stage and drew a large and very enthusiastic crowd who lapped up every moment in the West Yorkshire sunshine.
Having promised they'd try not to repeat many songs in both setlists, it seemed logical that the Main Stage would get the bigger tracks, and with only one new track on show, this turned into quite a greatest hits show.
Jimmy Eat World opened with 'Bleed American', following up with 'The Authority Song' and 'Work, by which time they'd well and truly hit the ground running.
The one taster from their forth-coming album 'Chase the Light' came in the form of 'Big Casino'. This track didn't exactly stand out, but maybe once the new material has time to worm it's way under our skin like so much of their back catalogue has done it will stand up with the best of them.
On a personal note it was great to hear the slower 'Here You Me' again, one of many tracks I'd forgotten about, something that made seeing this band again so enjoyable as they've dropped under the radar in the past couple of years.
They packed the classics into the climax, with 'Sweetness' and 'Pain' leading into their massive breakthrough single 'The Middle'. The latter was one of the highlights of the weekend. The same can be said for this whole set: welcome back Jimmy Eat World!
