Wiggle it

Now I fully confess that we only went along to see Wobbly Squadron because they had a silly name and we were bored but such chance encounters are the beauty of festivals! It transpires that Wobbly Squadron are a fine band indeed, ethnic beats mixed in with samples, funky bass lines and a host of wind instruments.

This is festival music from the old days of the free scene and I’d forgotten just how good it can be! The band look like they’re having fun and it rubs off on the crowd with pockets of dancers popping up all over the place. I couldn’t tell you what any of the songs were called but it really doesn’t matter when you’re dealing with instrumentals with such a happy and groovy vibe. Half the band sport amusing helmets and they constantly grin and play off each other whilst their female companion (responsible for the wind instruments) dances around the stage and encourages the crowd.

Wobbly Squadron really are one of the finds of the weekend, the songs are long and drawn out but perfect for this kind of laid back festival. If you like Gong, Ozric Tentacles and Hawkwind then you’ll love wobbly Squadron - excellent stuff.
