Essay for the Ordinary impressed us last year with their youthful brand of ska punk, yeah they were a bit rough around the edges but it was good enough to get us back this year to check on progress.
I don’t know what’s wrong with this festival this year, they seem to either have got together the worst sound equipment on the planet or the worst sound crew on the planet or a combination of both! Either way it spells disaster for Essay for the Ordinary, the guitars are practically non existent and don’t appear to be miked up at all, all you can hear throughout the 4 or 5 songs we get to see is brass and vocals. On top of this the bassist breaks a string in the second song and has to scurry off to blag another bass of someone backstage. It’s not going well and they know it, which is a real shame as they get one of the biggest crowds of the weekend in the Anderton’s Tent.
I find myself looking at the sound guy and wondering if he cannot hear what everyone else can (or rather can’t!). Even their well worked cover of the Ghostbusters theme can’t pull this one out of the bag and whilst they all seem to play well enough it’s impossible to make any kind of informed judgement in the face of such adversity. We have to head off to Sonic Boom 6 midway through the set and all we can do is shake our heads in frustration at the sound desk as we depart.
