Ego Ruins Show
No one would expect an ordinary performance for Julian Cope, which is why he draws quite a crowd at this rare festival performance. Unfortunately his set is extraordinary for the fact that the band try to sound check behind a black curtain and therefore come on stage half an hour late, with the crowd wound up to a frenzy in this time. In fact the curtain only finally comes down when the audience begin to slow clap and boo fervently. The band play 2 new songs with a brooding rock sound, crashing guitars and raging vocals, which have a classic rock feel despite their relative youth. The singer talks about making a sacrifice of his bass, smashing it and taunting various deities before he is unfortunately cut off before playing 'Pristeen' due to the fact the set is in danger of overrunning so much that the rest of the evening would be in disarray. Cope mocks hecklers who become fed up with his rambling and it's sad that his music suffers so blatantly tonight for his brash behaviour. What little Cope did play is overshadowed by the sound check antics and the fact that the next act, Martha Wainwright also has her set cut short to pay for his arrogance.
