Scholars give a fright!
Having to open the show for another band can at times be awkward, especially when you enter the stage and there are only a handful of people there. However, this didn’t stop Scholars from putting on an impressive set when they opened at the Barfly recently for Canterbury.
As they began there were very few people in the venue, but as they got further into the set, more people showed up and the guys left with a warm applause. These four guys are very strong musicians able to catch your ear with their addictive songs and eyes with their stage antics. The latter of these is more indicative of vocalist Sam who at times while singing, jumped from the stage and weaved between the people in the crowd, singing in their faces and nearly tripping one girl over with the microphone wire; this wasn’t on just one occasion.
The one element that stood out more than anything else on this performance was the “quarrel” they had mid way though one song. It can be a little alarming at first when the band members start shouting at each other, especially when it was so unexpected and in the middle of a song. However, when they continued to play and you realise what a fool you were to think there might have actually been punches about to fly, it is something that will instantly get the crowds attention and make the band remembered.
There may not have been many people there in the beginning, but those there at the end can’t say Scholars were a disappointment. Big songs by talented musicians…seek them out!
