Asobi Seksu - White Lies Winter Tour 2009

Asobi Seksu sit in an unusual musical genre. Their eclectic mix of high melodic vocals from lead singer Yuki Chikudate, with a gritty, fast-paced indie guitar accompaniment as been classed as “Dream Pop” or even “Shoegazing”. Personally, they reminded me slightly of a heavier St. Etienne but with their own unique flair.

Tonight however, they are supporting UK band White Lies. Yuki stands behind her keyboard adding synth and percussion, a small figure with big presence, being towered over by the tall guitarist. She has a powerful, haunting voice with a lot of character, but sadly on this occasion it wasn’t doing her any favours. The sound system was far too loud for this style of music, and as I stood at the back, wincing at the higher notes, was noticed with my writing pad out by a fellow listener and told “this makes my ears hurt”.

It was a real shame as I believe the band has a lot of potential and a unique sound that many will enjoy, but tonight the sound man was conspiring against them which ruined it for me and those stood near. Would I see Asobi Seksu again? I think I would, to see how well this long established band (whose music has been used in several highly successful US and UK TV shows) can perform in the right circumstances.
