Like hard-rocking hillbillies - here to make you grin

The audience has grown considerably by the time Low Five depart from the Mean Fiddler stage, and for a good reason. Mooney Suzuki are a strange band, best heard live in the flesh. Again, another dose of feel-good rock, but no sugar is needed to make this medicine go down- it’s just pure pleasure!

Dressed in floral shirts, leather jackets, snakeskin shoes and ridiculous facial hair, it’s easy to write Mooney Suzuki off as some kind of joke. Only the bassist appears normal until he starts to furiously attack his instrument like a madman stuck in a summer thunderstorm. Mooney Suzuki appear to constantly wrestle with their instruments more than play, but the result is an ear pleasing, chaotic yet curious collision of snapping six strings and howling lyrics.

Half way through the set they give up confining their outlandish show to the stage itself and leap into the audience. How often is it that the drummer of a band gets out from behind his drum kit to stroll around before jumping onto the Bassists back in the middle of the pit? This is normality for The Mooney Suzuki. As they dash around on each others shoulders with the crowd looking on with bemused looks they seem confident of their act.

Their wild garage rock is passionate and honest. There is no motive to be found underneath the brash noise- this is a band who simply love having a great time with their audiences. Don’t forget to check out their new album ‘Alive and Amplified’ when it’s released in August- it won’t capture all of their stage charm, but you can be sure that it will be a slice of happiness in the August music low.
