A real mind turner

Sam Duckworth (a.k.a Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly) and his band have been on tour for a while now and plan to continue until mid October. One stop on their travels was The Borderline in London's West End.

This Essex born and raised musician sure knows how to make a song and presents it so well. Performing tracks from his array of releases including 'All Falls Down' and 'The Uprising', this young soul had the backing of his band to liven things up a little with melodious brass and the tapping of keys. However, he was also able to take things back to basics with some more acoustic moments.

It would be typical to say how the crowd were excited, sang along and had a blast of a time. But on this occasion, the crowd were stationary for much of the time. There were possibly a measly five individuals singing their hearts out on each and every song, bounding around, arms flapping and really giving it their all. In terms of lyrics, Duckworth writes songs with meaning and messages; and not just words to sing along to. So this may be one reason why the remainder of individuals in the venue watched the stage, motionless, speechless and only livening up for a couple of tracks to prove they were still alive. The new single 'Collapsing Cities' was one such song; the brass melody was especially notable. Such songs go to prove Duckworth's brilliance and that he can make a decent catchy tune. If he can incorporate more of this magnitude into his music, he will be able to really get his messages out into the world.

Duckworth is well known for his viewpoints on racism and on many occasions has openly spoken out about politics, community, immigration and homosexuality; this night was no different. To have such strong beliefs and want to stand up for them is courageous, but to half way through a set discuss the BNP and immigration into the UK is maybe not one of the more appropriate times for such matters. This aside, the set was unbelievably intimate and one of the quieter ones to witness.

GCWCF will be on tour throughout the summer, into the autumn and will be hitting venues all across the UK.
