Goo Goo Dolls - Academy Liverpool - 20th November 2010

Closely following the release of their latest studio album, 'Something For The Rest Of Us', Goo Goo Dolls were back on this side of the pond with a list of dates throughout the UK. Whether to promote a new release or just one of their regular visits, they are always welcome.

The Liverpool O2 Academy was almost full, a mix of ages and sexes; many wives/girlfriends persuading their partners to the concert. The atmosphere was chilled and friendly, the crowd patiently waiting for the band to come on stage. The expectant onlookers erupted as the band came on stage. They opened with 'Sweetest Lie', the opening track from their new, ninth studio album. They were right on the ball from the off, John Rzeznik's charm and charisma wooing the audience and Robby Takac meandering about the stage with his well worn bass, a smile beaming right across his face.

As always, the band was on form. They continued playing a mixture of old and new, managing to notch up an impressive eighteen song set. 'As I Am', 'Home', and 'Now I Hear' from the latest album slotted in seamlessly with the old favourites. The crowd was very appreciative and as the evening went on more and more were seen to be singing along at the top of their voices. The set finished with the classic 'Iris'. The band was genuinely enjoying themselves as much as the audience and they promptly returned to the stage for their encore of 'Notbroken' and 'Broadway'.

The band's longevity is no surprise. Having originated in Buffalo, New York in 1984, the band continues to appeal to a cross section of tastes. Their live presence is legendary and their sheer enthusiasm and musicality is respected by all. We can only hope that they continue to record and, of course, tour.
