Heavy Petting Zoo @ Clwb Ifor Bach
We started off our Friday with Heavy Petting Zoo at Clwb Ifor Bach, the Female fronted rock n rollers from Swansea have some lovely scuzzy bass lines and hooks and on record were an exciting prospect. To their credit they put on a great live show, they have a dancer who kept us all entertained at the front – he really went for it and interacted well with their feisty front-woman; their conga through the crowd being one of the highlights. The audience loved the playful aspects of the show, moving ever closer to the band, with several people really letting loose by the closing moments.
All in all though their tunes all began to sound a touch familiar at about half way through the set, so it was the fantastic guitar and bass backing that really held your attention in the latter stages, and although she gave the set a focal point, their front-woman pushed things a bit hard in the heat of the moment and came off sounding more shouty than sultry live, which was a shame as on record her bluesy crooning is a treat.
