Patent Pending on their Spring Break UK Tour 2014
According to the bands lead singer, last time Patent Pending played the Capital, less than a hundred people showed up to see them perform. From the sight of this crowd, this fact is very hard to believe as only moments before they got on stage it was announced that they had in fact SOLD OUT The Garage in Islington for this evenings performance.
The set started with enough energy to power a building and never letting it slip throughout the performance. From the opening of I Already Know (She Don't Give A S***T About Me) to the concluding notes of Douchebag in the encore, Patent Pending gave this performance everything they had to give; blood, sweat and tears, with Joe actually welling up at the amount of support the crowd were showing them.
Tracks such as The Whiskey, the Liar, the Thief have been written with such precision that the sing-a-long choruses were so enjoyable you could scream them at the top of your lungs, which the majority of the crowd took to doing. Others such as One Less Heart To Break with reference to a friend who committed suicide, were full of emotion. The acoustic performance that Joe gave of Spin Me Around, a song that was close to his heart was a great moment in the set and the calm few minutes that the crowd needed to catch their breath. There Was a Time was another breath-taking minute long acoustic song.
The cover of Party Hard went down well, but the bands snippet of Soft Kitty and the theme tune from The Big Bang Theory left the crowd excited. Jaret Reddick of People On Vacation was welcomed on stage to perform alongside Joe on Classic You as they wrote the track together.
There is something special about Patent Pending. They are incredibly united as a band from the way they interact as one unit on stage to the united gang vocals and harmonies that power through the song, taking Shut It Down and Brighter as particular examples. When it comes to interacting with the crowd, Psycho In Love was the track that got the band and crowd up close and personal. Joe had the crowd split in two down the middle, then he and bassist Corey ran down the centre and then swam (over the crowd) back to the stage. Anti-Everything gave the band a chance to show off their synchronized dance moves as Joe spoke about One Direction and how Patent Pending can dance better than Harry Styles. With the crowd so surprised by the lads dancing, somehow the guitarist made it to the back of the crowd and stood on the bar without anyone noticing.
Joe certainly has a way with the crowd and talks to them like everyday friends rather than adoring music admirers. You could quite easily see the shock and admiration on the faces of the band members. They appreciated that the crowd had come out to see them and gave one heck of a set as thank you. Here is looking forward to a return to the UK very soon.
