How Fast Is Your Wolf?!
Turbowolf were riding a phenomenal wave of momentum at the end of their previous album run; impressing at shows across various festivals, destroying The Monarch in the process and supporting for Cancer Bats at Koko. It's been approximately six months since that run, and in no way at all has the momentum waned. In fact it has probably increased due to the massive hype built towards new material and this particular tour. Dubbed "A Small Tour Of New Music", the band sold out the Barfly with no problem and when they hit the stage absolute bedlam ensued.
As promised they mixed old tracks with plenty of new, and well let's just say there hasn't been another band in a long while who have been able to stir this kind of reaction with a set filled with new tracks. It didn't matter to the crowd, the intensity was there, the brilliantly tight, yet chaotic musicianship was there and the new stuff just sounded monstrous. If the anticipation for new music was already there it will have increased tenfold after this tour. The highlight on the night came with the band's performance of new single Solid Gold. Bassist Lianna Davis crowdsurfed her way all the way to the bar at the back, had a shot, boogied a bit then made her way back (just) to pick up her bass as the song kicked in. It is stuff like this which makes Turbowolf such an exciting live band, you don't know what's going to happen next, and that element of danger in live music is something that has become so saturated in recent years, so to have that is very impressive. Alongside the new tracks, fan favourites like A Rose For The Crows and Read + Write whipped everyone into a frenzy with mosh pits, crowd surfers and head bangers galore.
Turbowolf are playing Camden Rocks at the end of May. They are worth the entry fee alone.
