Very very impressive
There seems to be an influx of duo style bands at the moment, and whilst God Damn didn’t start out as such you wouldn’t know it. The brothers from The Black Country deliver their music in such a way it is both mesmerising and just downright impressive. The band work hard on the live scene, and you will likely have checked them out at some point in the last couple of years, and based on tonight’s performance they’re only getting better.
As the two amble on to the stage to little fanfare, you’ll instantly be sucked in by the simplicity of it all. Simple in the fact that what we’ve got here is a band who just turn up, play some great heavy rock and leave again - what more does anyone need? You’ll find watching this lot live that you’ll become transfixed on either one or the other for long periods. The heavy guitar work from Thom unleashes a gritty grunge/punk fuelled level of aggression and the drumming style from Ash is powerful and an enjoyable watch as a smile rarely leaves his face. The down tuned flurry of tracks gives it a real Melvins feel. Yes they were there to support Hawk Eyes, but there have been plenty of bands coming through the Barfly whereby the masses end up staying downstairs drinking a shandy or two instead of checking out the support band - this was not the case tonight as God Damn’s pull increases so does their crowd size. There wasn’t anyone in the venue with a ticket wanting to miss this and they were not let down at all as they spun through tracks new and old. The key here is the fact that should they continue to deliver mesmeric and heavy shows in this fashion then they will be the one’s headlining venues like The Barfly in no time.
