Surviving the Nu-Metal Wasteground

It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Papa Roach. It was almost five years ago, during the nu-metal years, that their first major label album 'Infest' was released. Two albums later with nu-metal dead and poor album sales has meant an interesting period for the band.

As they open their set with 'Dead Cell' they immediately cause a crowd to appear larger than the one Feeder managed to draw on Friday. As the crowd surges towards the barrier one thing is for sure - Papa Roach have never gone away in many people's hearts.

After venturing on to material from their 'LoveHateTragedy' they move along to the hit single 'She Loves Me Not' from the same album which proves another hit as they surge in to a set of hit after hit. This is followed with the latest single 'Getting Away With Murder' and then it's time for some singles from 'Infest' with 'Broken Home', a brief Queens of the Stone Age cover, 'Between Angels and Insects' and finally 'Last Resort'.

They may have come a long way over the years - but Papa Roach still have the energy, emotion and drive that has led to them being one of a few nu-metal survivors. With a depleted fan base, grey clouds and Donington's rather poor and windy sound there is no chance that Jacoby and co. are on top form, but there's also the fact that Papa Roach are one of the few bands at Download this year that are still putting their all in to their live show.
