Fantastic Fun

Paul St Paul and The Apostles step from the debris of grimmy indie and cheeky pop and calling upon all the cultural points of reference of the glam rock scene, make a mockery of everything you've ever heard declared as the best live performance ever with their energetic 80's disco inferno. Imagine kitsch 80's step dance subverted by messianic and gothic overtones in Rocky Horror style and you're half way there.

Essentially performance art, Paul St Paul's act is a highly choreographed routine that involves plenty of dancing and you quickly forget that there's little music actually being made live as you lose yourself in the retro beats and sublime fun, as the opener implores, "If you want to have a great time get yourself together and let your body go".

God save the souls of any good Catholics in the audience as Paul St Paul has his "hot cross buns crucified" by two guitar toting cohorts. As much as the act is pure fun, it's also highly intelligent, aping half a dozen films and god knows what else in its slick path and before you can ask them yourself, a phone is ringing on stage with a satire on the questions you know the group would be asked by "serious" paparazzi, culminating in the shocking, "Paul St Paul, are you gay?" This launches the troupe into a feverish pop tune called, 'Let's Pretend To Be Gay' - simply smile-inducing.

There are also religious overtones galore; in extravagance the priapic becomes the holy, with Paul St Paul leading communion with his disciples in a dramatic tableau, which includes the consumption of a CD. Thankfully unlike the disc, for most of us the live act will be easy to swallow with the tunes so light and buoyant that you can't help but join in.

If you're not ready for this camp aerobic explosion yet, then wait until you're bored of musicians fighting over whose album is the most soul searching and see how grateful you are for this utterly nuts disco delight.
